Teaching Youth Justice in Reading Circles

According to a 2024 review, Reading for Justice: Books for Teens and Young Adults, from The Southern Poverty Law Center (SPLC), “Literature can be transformative in helping us learn about the world and see ourselves as part of the shared human experience. Through reading, reflecting and taking action in our daily lives to create more inclusive communities, we can resist hate and the efforts to limit our freedom to learn.”

In current national conversations surrounding youth violence - these questions come to mind.

  • Might justice awareness become a focus when working with youth?

  • Might reading circles (book or audio) centered around justice-oriented, youth appropriate themes become an expanded tool for diversion and prevention of delinquency?
