Connecting the MJJA DIVISION PROGRAMS TO CHILDHOOD TRAUMA
Recently, a nascent body of literature has evolved that directly connects childhood trauma to teen delinquency and adult criminal behavior. Although relatively new to juvenile professionals’ discussion on the national level, MJJA has long been promoting discussions and presentations with expert research on childhood trauma through its various programs, conferences, lunchtime trainings, town hall gatherings, etc.
A review of MJJA’s divisions - RED (Racial and Ethnic Disparity), MODDC SToPP (Missouri Development Disabilities Council – Disrupting the School to Prison Pipeline, as well as Handle with Care MO all promote and amplify awareness of childhood trauma as a connector to delinquency. Rightly so, because several studies have been conducted on the impact that childhood trauma has on criminal behavior. Most studies conclude that childhood traumas are clearly associated with criminal behavior, and that individuals who were imprisoned have higher degrees of physical abuse and sexual abuse.
